Help Engine Burning Oil S70

I have a 98 Volvo S70 base model with 120k miles on it. Since the last oil change I have noticed my engine oil level keeps dipping at a steady rate. It's nothing dramatic but I need to refuel 1/4 to 1/2 qt every 3-4 weeks and I drive about 500 miles a week. Also I have noticed during cold starts the engine is a little hesistent and can hear the piston not cranking as smoothly during start up. The engine viberates a little more now than when its new but it doesn't seem like there's going to be claustrophic failure. My question is should I have someone take a look at the engine now? What are the possibilies the engine is burning oil? I have checked my garage floor and there is no pool of oil and I have also taken a look under the car and there are no tell tale signs of oil leaking. What might be the cause of this?

I know if I have someone take a look at the engine he's going to have to open it up and it's not going to be cheap. Sholuld I just wait till the engine dies and have it rebuild or have it checked now? I am planning on driving this car till 200k. If I do get it rebuilt now I might have a turbo placed in. Any thoughts are welcome.

Robert.

If you are driving 2000 miles a month and adding less than a quart per month, this seems really quite good. Are you using the grade of oil Volvo specifies for your driving conditions?

Yup 10w30. Currently switched to half syntec blend but soon to full syntec. Doing it in increment steps to ease it in and hopefully let the seals slowly restore if it's brittle already.

All older engines start burning some oil. Your concern should be if the oil pump is working correctly or not. With engine idling, open the oil fill cap and look in...do this very slowly. Hopefully you don't have high pressure in your engine causing oil to actually come out the top with the cap open. If you do, then your pcv system needs cleaning/replaced, which could be the cause of this oil burn. If all is well with the oil fill cap off, look in and you'll see if oil is making it to the top of the engine or not. If it seems minimal,or not at all, then you've got dry engine parts working over-time, leading to burning oil and wearing engine parts...this is not good. Most likely reason is the "O" ring at the bottom of your oil pan which will require the oil pan off and the pump's "O" ring replaced. If this is not the cause, then engine ring wear and/or valves wearing is most likely the culprit. If your car is not sluggish (all you have is extra vibration) then I would live with this in regards to having to add oil, but you chouls check your top engine motor mount (the one off the firewall that is round with round rubber piece in it) to see if this is broken. These are easily replaced with a new poly mount which www.ipdusa.com sells as well as www.fcpgroton.com
    Good luck!

Ok I finally got a chance to take a look at the engine. There was no oil coming out of oil fill hole. Oil comes up to top of the engine covers maybe a 1/4 of the "crank shaft"? is that what it's called? A little bit of splashing inside of the engine when the crank shaft is runnning around. Is that enough oil? Or should the oil completely submerges the crank shaft?

That sounds right...the way mine is. Did you try laying the cap over the hole to see if there was any pressure?

You mentioned that oil shouldn't come out the top of the engine with the cap open.

I have '96 850 with 175K miles, and oil does sort of splash out a little with the cap open with the engine running. It doesn't gush out, just seems to splash off the moving parts near the oil hole (just enough I have to wipe off the sparkplug cover afterwards). Should oil NEVER splash out, or is a little normal?

I have always been faithful about the flame trap service, just wondering whether it might be clogged already creating high crankcase pressure. Any input is appreciated...thanks!

I would consider the splash of oil to be a good thing, and as expected.

yes...a bit of splashing is good...I was talking of pressure. For instance, take your oil fill cap and place it over the sump hole. Does it float up? If it does, you have positive pressure and that's a bad thing, but since you mention keeping your pcv hoses (including flame trap) clean, I wouldn't suspect that happening with your engine.
