Just wanted to let you all know how Volvo is taking care of the ETMs now. I expected the ETM on my 1999 S70AWD with 92,000 miles on it to fail soon. I had a 99-V70 where it failed at 68,000 and a 1999 S70 non-turbo where it failed at 98,000 miles. I was getting the same symptoms of oscillating idle and intermittant hard starting. This morning, under hard acceleration, the ETS light came on, I lost power, and it went into limp mode. Took it in after being at work for 2 hours. They read the codes and said they now use a Volvo software download in all be the worst cases. That is what they did, and it is running fine now. Did not change the ETM, though they made sure the PCV line was not plugged. Anyone else had this done yet, and did it still fail later?

    My 2000 S70 turbo has a hesitation at certain throttle positions. I also suspect the ECM. Is Volvo replacing this free of charge? I priced one from FCP and was a bit surprised at the cost. I also know that the software would have to be updated after the install.

    The way they (Volvo) described it to me is in line with what EricW says. They say that the band of error in the settings was too narrow. Said this put too many of the ETMs in "failure mode" too early, and that the functional life of the ETM is actually much longer. They acknowledged that the potentiometers would eventually fail, but at a time 1.5 to 2 times longer that what the current programming allows.

    We will see.

      So they're now trying to get you past the 10 years/200K mile mark before the ETM fails so they don't have to pay for a new one, huh?

    My ETM failed Monday. The dealer flashed the software and said "It's fixed". I can still feel a hesitation at certain throttle positions. The software just allows the ETM to better deal with worn potentiometers, but doesn't fix the underlying problem. I expect my ETM to completely fail and be replaced fairly soon.

    The first mine failed the dealer cleaned the ETM. It later failed after 2500 miles and then they replaced it and downloaded the software. There is supposed to be a new software patch soon, maybe you got the new one. Everyone will need new software and should be contacted by Volvo.

      just got our 99 V70 with 69K back from dealer. New ETM, cv boots, vacuum hose.
      warranty (we had the letter from Volvo--2 weeks ago). ETM thru 3 codes.
      They replaced right away, had the ETM cleaned at 60K. I have all paper work confirming this. My Indie (who has all Volvo computer diag gear) pulled the codes (free) confirmed the problem after ETS came on with CEL. They didnt clear codes so dealer could check out. So far seems fine. Dealer even called two later to check if everything was OK, now that was a nice touch.
