Timing belt help please! S70

I'm working on changing the timing belt and tensioner on a 98 S70 non turbo. I read bay 13's instructions, but can't get the marks lined up. The crank sprocket has two marks, so I'm guessing the point on the block gets centered between these? Also, I noticed that there's slack in the belt between the crank sprocket and cam exhaust pulley. I never loosened any bolts for the tensioner, I just turned the engine over by hand to try and line things up. BTW, this car has the manual belt tensioner. I'd greatly appreciate some help with this.

Thanks,
Dave

    Timing belt help please! S70

    Hey Guys,

It turned out that turning the engine counter clockwise made the manual tensioner kick back and loosen the belt tension. The belt didn't jump teeth, and I finally got everything lined up. The belt change went smoothly enough. I wound up setting the new manual tensioner to about the same spot as the old one was. The car is now running again. The old belt had cracks all over the rubber, and looked like it was about to go. The car had 140 K when I changed the belt, and from what I could find it had never been done before ( the car belongs to a friend of mine who I was helping). Kinda scarey, but nice to know it's safe now.

    Thanks!
    Dave

You probably turned the crank the wrong way...try turning it clockwise. Tensioner should tighten back up and marks should be right no if you haven't slipped anything off yet. Good luck!

    Here you go S70

    Dave,

I thought I already responded to your post earlier:

Your TB is slack...? cause is failed tensioner.
When I did my TB at 54K, I replaced the tensioner.
I did NOT replace the 2 rollers.

TIP: Mark the existing setup with whiteout (provided the alignment is still good! If it has been off then you are better off the factory markings on the sprockets...very difficult to see)
