ABS tough question 850 1996

Hi,

My ABS has failed and has caused the speedometer to intermittently fail too. Please don't tell me to send my ABS to Vitor, I'm far from US.
Strange, for the past week, the ABS mil is off, and it's not because of dead bulb. BUt still the speedometer fails when the brake pedal pressed too long.
Since letting Vitor fix the ABS is out of question, I wonder if anyone knows how to bypass the ABS so the speedometer can function normally???

Why not give Vitor an email? He is a good person and will probably try to help you. Perhaps he may have a solution for you.

The dead speedo is yet another symptom of a (badly) failed ABS computer - I had the same thing happen. To get your speedo back, you need a good ABS unit. Apparently, the signal that goes to the speedo either passes through and/or comes from the ABS unit. When I had the same problem, Victor fixed the unit and the speedo was back. As far as your location goes...MIJ gives good advice. Shipping shouldn't be an issue. Find a way to send it off to Victor.

I know you discount Victor fixing your ABS unit, but I really don't know anyway to by-pass it to get your speedo back, so to me, his service still makes sense. Many people from all over the world send him their ABS units. He even explains what to do for international shipments to and from him on his website as well as how to make payment. Personally, no matter where I was in the world, I would do it. I'm speaking from having him do mine last year (very very happy with his service, and he's quick too!) as well as having a couple of my friends who live in Tokyo use his service.

Thanks guys, I have heard Vito's good reputation in fixing ABS, but you guys definitely don't know how bad is my country's mail reputation...
Anyway, I'll give it a try..
Do you know his email...?

If you don't like your regular mail, FedEx or UPS (if available in your country) might be a better alternative. Anyway, Victor's email addy is this:
vicrocha@earthlink.net Write him and see what alternatives he uses for mailing the ABS unit back to you.

If you are brave enough, fix it yourself 850 1996

If you don't want to use Victor, then at your own risk, try to fix it yourself.

I have not done this myself, but have read several posts in which regular folks have fix them themselves.

First, you'll need an electronics soldering kit, good magnifying lense and good lighting.

Remove the ABS unit and open its plastic case carefully. Take pictures if you have a digital camera. The problem of most units is broken soldering areas, specially in the area where the cable connector fits. Apparently the broken soldering is obvious to detect.

Try it, you have nothing to lose.
