Clutch replacements in 5-speed 850s 850

When changing/replacing the clutch in a 5-speed equipped 850, is it true that the engine and tranny have to come out before any work can be done? (I don't really know, I just heard it...both my 850s have been autos)

Juan,

Yes and no. Depends on how you decide to do the job. Did mine 2 summers ago engine in the car, removed the transmission while supporting the engine from above. After doing the job I think it is a toss up as to whether to pull the engine and trans together while leaving the engine support frame in the car verses leaving the engine in the car, removing the trans and support frame. If I have to do it again I would probably leave the engine in the car. If done this way you don't have to jerk around with the coolant and A/C plus all that is attached to the engine. But on the flip side you work a lot on your back, are bending over the engine bay a lot and changing the rear engine seal is a bit more of a pain.

Tim

YES, unfortunately. The clutch is buried within the transmission.

It can be done either way, the factory way to do it includes supporting the engine and pulling the gear box out. Obviously the other way is also a possibility. I have always had the luxury of a hoist and all of the factory tools so I am far from the best guy to advise you about doing it on the ground. But, an engine support tool from Lone Star Tool (get the OTC one) is not that expensive and I like it better than the factory set up.
