Key won't turn to start position C70 2001

Current situation: key will only turn to position I or O which means I cannot start it.
Before failure: stopped & turned off car on downhill slope, engaged parking brake.
After failure: used the shift lock override to roll to level ground; key still won't turn to III (or II); key won't turn to O or I (stays in between O-I), will not come out; clean shift lock button- can now remove key.
Background: brake pedal shudders and noise made when driving on bumpy downhill (everyday from driveway); ABS & Check Engine lights begin intermittent warnings (one or both); STC light joins the intermittent warning lights; drive gear disengages-may or maynot engage after restarting car-but only for a minute; replace transmission (EEEK $4000- 4 shops-each said replace-no options); car will go again in Drive- but no other changes- feels the same and intermittent lights continue- wallet shy to bring it in to a shop; Brake light and Speedometer dial goes to zero are now also intermittent warning symptoms.
Recommendations: clean shift buttons; problem could be in ignition cylinder- if so, what part do I need to order (assuming I can remove it)?
What I think: it is all related & it did NOT need a new transmission. I think what ever is causing all the lights & speedometer dial to quit is not recognizing the transmission is in Park.
Please help, at least to get it started so I don't have to have it towed.
Thank you.

Key won't turn to start position C70 2001

Remember, I am not an ASE mechanic nor will I ever be one. I just like to use logic. I think you are correct that the tranny is not Kaput. The linkage between the shifter and the tranny is out of whack. Probably from being in park and forcing it into R or D with all of the downhill pressure. You should be using the parking brake to hold the car in N before shifting to P.
The inability to remove the key when in park is the clue, the car thinks it is not in park. You will have to remove the center console, at the minimum, to investigate whether the shifter is loose or misaligned. The car is supposed to start in P or N only. So shift to N and try to get the key to turn, moving the shifter incrementally until you get to the starter. That will tell you how far the linkage is off. I would suspect about 1/4inch.

It appears the current problem is the lock cylinder assembly.
      Thanks for replying.
Also, I can't seem to find a repair manual for this car (200I C70) other than Chilton's Import Car Repair Manual 1998-2002. Have they really stopped publishing specific manuals ?
      Thanks again.

You figured it out, we have been having lock cylinder problems with these cars for awile. Does not appear to be alot of rhyme or reason either. "I got out and went into the store, came back and I could not start my car", usually something along these lines.

        Good Luck,
        Mark

Great, I still have the throttle module problem to look forward to also. If it is ok to run the car without the ABS module while it is getting repaired, I don't feel a great need to replace it. Will the car pass a smog test without it?
