Removal of water pump gasket V70-XC70

Hi all,
I am in the middle of a timing belt change, and I decided to put in a new water pump while in there. Now I've got bits of the old WP gasket stuck to the block. Any one BTDT? What did you do to get the stuborn bits of WP gasket off the block?

thanks,
-Greg

Anybody used loctite gasket remover? comments? V70-XC70 1998

I am plugging away at it, but not making what I would call satisfactory progress. I got most of one piece off, but not all of it. The other three pieces are even harder to get to.

I ordered some of this loctite gasket remover.

Just use a gasket scraper and a razor blade. No real magic or tricks here.

      Hi Mark,
First of all, thanks for both this response and your response to my other thread. I certainly appreciate the advice.

I am surprised that a razor blade is the solution. It is so tight in there, once my hand is in there with a razor blade, I cannot see anything. Oh well, I am slowly working at it.

Have you ever used anything like this?

      Thanks again,

(still trying to get the rest of the gasket off)

Now you know why shops charge so much to change the pump. Some times things just won't come apart the way they should and it takes longer than normal. Like frozen rotors, axels, shock bolts, you name it. There are no such things as short cuts, just better procedures and those are learned, not tought.

        Having fun yet?! :)
You will have the great satisfaction of "been there, done that".

          Greg,
Not so much helpful as comiserating with you. I have found a single edge razor to be mostly innefective, it bends too easily. A sharp putty knife with a longish handle is easier, just have to be careful that the metal doesn't get scratched, gouged. Steel wool is also good to get the residual off, but then you have to be very careful to make sure the shaft is clean of little metal dust and bits.
I realize it isn't fun, just don't hurry the process.

            Klaus,
thanks for the comments. This is helpful. This morning before work I bought a long handled scraper and some permatex gasket remover. Going back in there tonight. I'll remember not to hurry.
            Best Regards,
            -Greg

Was this supposed to be helpful? Or are you just letting me know that my situation is amusing? I appreciate conversing with you all the same, but I'm just curious.

That's good to know. Softening of the gasket is what I really need. It is hard as stone right now, and I don't want to use too much force against the engine block. I will let you know how it goes.
Thanks for your input. much appreciated.
              -Greg
