AC Compressor does not turn on 850 1996

My 1996 855T started blowing hot air yesterday. The "A/C Off" seems to work (at least the red light turns on/off) but I don't hear the compressor turn on nor do I see any effect on the tach when it should engage. The fan runs ok and the recirculate switch works ok. So the fuse is ok as well.

Anyone know where I should start looking first? Is there a relay for the compressor? Is there a clutch on the compressor?

Thanks in advance,

Eric

There is a clutch on the compressor but it's not going to engage if the coolant pressure is low. Unplug the sensor plug and jumper the pins. The clutch should then engage. If not you can try disconnecting the clutch plug down by the compressor and connecting it straight to the battery. The engine doesn't need to be on to do this. The clutch should then engage. If not then it's bad or you have a poor compressor ground. Good 850 ac info at: au.geocities.com/ozbrick850/aircon-keithP.html
