For Klaus/Madein Japan--buzzing/vibrating sound behind dash 850

Posted a message about three days ago regarding a buzzing/vibrating noise coming from somewhere behind my dash, but no one has responded yet. Had to send Victor my ABS module three weeks ago, and when I re-installed it a couple of days ago, I noticed the sound. Only at low speeds. Highway speeds you don't hear it. No tell-tale clicking, indicating a tooth gone on a speedo gear. Noise is intermittent, intervals of seconds. Sounds exactly like one of those old worn electric clocks when the bearing starts to go and it makes that off and on again buzzing vibrating sound. Incredibly irrititating.

I have to head back to the States in three days, and won't get another chance to work on this car until I return Christmas or New Year's. Do either of you have any idea what might be causing it? I checked out the heater fan, temp controls, etc., and none of them had any affect. Kind of hard to pin down, but it does sound like right around the instrument panel. Dick

Don't know if you have ECC with the temp sensor in the dash but our sensor is making a vibrating noise (seems like the tiny internal fan inside the sensor is out of balance or hitting the side of the sensor). Not got around to pulling it out to see if I can repair it.

Phly 50--thanks for the tip! It has ECC, but I wasn't aware there was a temp sensor in the dash powered by a little motor. Will check that one out when I get back over here in the late fall or winter. In the meantime I will bring myself up to speed on my 97R wagon in Oregon, and familiarize myself with the ECC temp sensor. Dick

Like Klaus, I really don't have an answer for you. I would try to hold down different parts of the dash when it starts to see if you can get it to go away with certain pressure. At least this way you might be able to pin-point the location of the vibration. If that doesn't work, I'd say that the batteries will die in the small vibrator your lady friend dropped into the dash by the time christmas rolls around. LOL. More seriously though...I know that these intermittant issues can be quite annoying.

MIJ--God, one could wish it was the batteries in the vibrator at this stage! That's fixable! Bit the bullet and disconnected the ABS module, took it for a spin this afternoon, and sighed with heavy relief when I still heard the buzzing and vibrating. If I'd heard nothing I would have been totally depressed, knowing it was related to the speedometer, because disconnecting the ABS module makes it inoperative. At this point I'm going to let the wifey worry about it while I kick back on the farm in Oregon with a good bottle of cabernet and the phone to Norway disconnected. It's either kill or cure--smoke curls up from the dash or the noise stops on its own accord. Thanks again to both you and Klaus for your input. Will catch up with you later when I'm back in the States and have more time to post my two cents on the forum. Been pretty hectic around here for the last several months with all the remodeling I got locked into. Dick

Wish I could help you on this issue. I had some vibration sounds right under my steering wheel area about 40 miles into owning my S70, and I could press the lower knee bolster cover and it would go away. I finally took it out and put it back in and the vibration noise stopped. But, in your case, it seems like a totally different animal.

I saw you post, but I didn't have an answer.

Could the vibration be coming up the steering shaft? Did you do the American thing and pound on the dash yet? No wire hanging down near the front wheel?

I know the sound you are describing, but the only thing I can think of is the RPM gauge. Or does it only make the sound while moving?

Klaus--only makes the sound while moving, so it's not the rpm gauge. The test I guess I will have to perform and really don't want to, is disconnect the ABS module and see if the buzzing/vibrating stops. If it does I will be in deep doodoo because I won't have time to jerk it out and send it back again to Victor for further testing or analysis. Will let you know if I have time. Awful lot to do between now and flight time Monday. Thanks to you both for responding. Dick

Eventhough the last thing you did was the ABS module, that would have no bearing on the noise from the dash, especially speed related. It could be the speedo gear getting ready to let go. More testing will be required, sorry. At least the ABS is working again! Good thing on wet roads and cobblestone.

Welcome back to the USA for the summer.
