S60 no start message S60 2001

Group:
Yesterday I unlocked my '01 S60 2.4T, got in and tried to start it. I think it cranked a bit, but then said something like "Start disabled, try again". So I did with the same result.
Resisting the urge to panic, I got out locked the doors, waited a moment, and did it all over again. This time it started with no message.

What is that message referring to?
Is there a list somewhere of all the trouble messages and the meaning?

I do not know where to start or what to advise wife if it happens again.

Hi sevenvolvos it may be that your immobilizer antenna ring is going bad. It's a ring that goes around where you insert your key and it reads the chip in the key. It's designed to prevent your car from being started with anything but your key. I have a 2002 v70 and it had the same problem. Mine started most of the time but every so often it gave the same warning message. I didn't want to be stranded somewhere and have to pay a towing charge, so after reading a number of listing on this board I replaced my. The part cost about $60.00 at the dealer and it took only a few minutes to install. The problem is now gone. Ketchb

Call Volvo on their 800 number and ask for a book with all of the codes, it does exist and might cost you $25.

As for your problem, your key has a chip imbedded in it and it may be failing. Make sure your key chain doesn't contain a magnet. The next time that happens, just pull your key out and put it back in again.
Your wife's key is probably in better shape.
You do not need to get out of the car to lock it and set the alarm. Just make sure the key is out when you lock/unlock using the keyfob.

Klaus:
In '01 I do not think the key has a chip.
I have the regular fob with the locking system.
The fob had no problem letting me into the car.
I have nothing on the key at all except the fob.
