Hot start problem 850 1994

Car starts perfectly and runs well when cold. When hot it will not start or is balky. Cool down and it is ok and even on the highway. This problem is recent and seems to be worsening. Thought I saw Klaus had something in this regard, but can not find it. Fuel pressure regulator? Fuel filter recently changed and car in good tune. No codes thrown.

Ideas and suggestions welcome, thanks,

dick

Do you mean when the weather is hot/cold or the engine hot/cold? I remember another '94 owner saying there is a problem with that year's gas caps. Seems they develope venting problems which makes it hard to start after driving. Try loosening the cap next time when it won't start.

Strictly temp dependant here in TX. You can see how the solder joints have deteriorated. Gas cap is not related in this case.

Sounds like fuel pump and or fuel pump relay.

Problem fixed: fuel pump relay 850 1994

Replaced the relay (9434138) and the problem is gone. Took the box off the relay and solder joints do look bad. Probably can fix it as Don Foster has in the RWD FAQ has done. These Bosch relays are all similar so a touch up with a low wattage iron will most likely do the trick.

Thanks. Have a new relay on order. Present pump is quiet, so am thinking relay as Bosch does have a reputation with the RWD models.
