Thanks Klaus - happy to get a response. I am sitting here wondering if I should have gone to the ER, as the mounting clip on the end of the spoiler ripped a section out of my knuckle, spewing blood everywhere. Things got interesting fast, as this car is much heavier than the VW. I was committed to catching up with the car before it ran into the immovable block wall I built a few years back. BTW, I ran over my best friend with MY VW once, as he was attempting to help get the car out of some mud. Luckily his leg sank in the mud as the car passed over.
Spoiler construction: I had inspected the spoiler carefully(?) a year ago, and saw the rubber plug at the left edge (no wires are visible). I never dreamed they buried the wires in the middle of that - the engineers must have stayed up late working on it. I was convinced the wires must go through the center support and thus the lid. The spoiler "tearoff" pulled the wires and rubber mounting piece right out, exposing this piece of engineering (but left the wires intact). Another innovation is the Molex pins in the connector under the trunk lid can be removed by prying out a plastic tab on the connector. This allows the entire cable with pins attached to pull out of the access hole on the left edge of the lid. The connector is too large to get through the hole. In the old days, I would use a pair of pliers or a screwdriver to flex the tits of the pin to get it out, possibly rendering it unusable. So, I was able to remove the spoiler with cable and fool the "Light out" indicator by popping in a 50 watt 10 ohm resistor for now. Warms the trunk at around 15 watts...
I had arrived at your conclusion - head back to my indie, who has a few 850's lying around. Thanks for the info - waiting for my wounds to heal before I go back in with wrenches. Don
