Tips on third brake light install 850 1995

I tried to stop my car from rolling today by grabbing the spoiler (I was standing near the rear when it began rolling away from me). The spoiler came off in my hand, and after running after the car, jumping in to grab the e-brake, I stopped it and began pondering my situation (spoiler hanging off the side of the car by the wiring). Regulars may recall I inquired about removing the spoiler a year ago. Turns out the light wiring goes around the edge and not through the lid. So, happy day, the spoiler is off (without damage!).

I have done some research, and it seems the absence of the third light will prevent passing state inspection. Anyone know how hard it is to add an OEM third light housing to the rear deck? The wiring I am not concerned about - I am wondering how it mounts. Thank you for any info. Don

ps Please stop laughing now. I have owned manual shift cars all my life and I can't get used to making sure I am in park when I shut it off to do something quickly and get back in. It ends up in R a lot. I better get over this...

Hmmm, that's odd. Usually it's the people getting their first stick that forget to use the handbrake. That part should be second nature to you.

Another interesting thought is that 1993 and later RWD Volvo requires the shifter to be in P before you can remove the key - just like Ford and GM did since 1969 (on column shift, anyway). I'm surprised the 850 doesn't have that interlock too.

LOL!!!! Tears!!!

Thanks, I needed that! You brightened my day. I am still laughing!
Did I ever tell you about the time I ran over myself with my Volkswagen? Major LOL!!

Call on of the junk yards and ask for a third light (complete). You will find installation as easy as removing your spoiler. The wiring hookups should still be in the trunk. All you will need to do is lift up the rear deck lid and insert the light.

Thanks Klaus - happy to get a response. I am sitting here wondering if I should have gone to the ER, as the mounting clip on the end of the spoiler ripped a section out of my knuckle, spewing blood everywhere. Things got interesting fast, as this car is much heavier than the VW. I was committed to catching up with the car before it ran into the immovable block wall I built a few years back. BTW, I ran over my best friend with MY VW once, as he was attempting to help get the car out of some mud. Luckily his leg sank in the mud as the car passed over.

Spoiler construction: I had inspected the spoiler carefully(?) a year ago, and saw the rubber plug at the left edge (no wires are visible). I never dreamed they buried the wires in the middle of that - the engineers must have stayed up late working on it. I was convinced the wires must go through the center support and thus the lid. The spoiler "tearoff" pulled the wires and rubber mounting piece right out, exposing this piece of engineering (but left the wires intact). Another innovation is the Molex pins in the connector under the trunk lid can be removed by prying out a plastic tab on the connector. This allows the entire cable with pins attached to pull out of the access hole on the left edge of the lid. The connector is too large to get through the hole. In the old days, I would use a pair of pliers or a screwdriver to flex the tits of the pin to get it out, possibly rendering it unusable. So, I was able to remove the spoiler with cable and fool the "Light out" indicator by popping in a 50 watt 10 ohm resistor for now. Warms the trunk at around 15 watts...

I had arrived at your conclusion - head back to my indie, who has a few 850's lying around. Thanks for the info - waiting for my wounds to heal before I go back in with wrenches. Don
