O2 Sensors - Direct Fit Vs. Universal 850

Any comments on Bosch direct replacement vs. Bosch universal O2 sensors? There is a big price difference - $85 vs. $160. Also, should both the front and rear be replaced at the same time? What's a typical mileage replacement interval for these things?

Thanks!

Pat

With the direct fit, the harness is attached so you unplug one and plug in the new one. The universal requires you to use a splice kit to join the 4 wires. It's straight forward and hard to mess up unless your're doing it unnder the car in poor light. I'd remove the old sensor and work with it somewhere where you can sit down so you can be sure each "bullet" splice is secure. Also, some vendors have the wrong # listing for the 96 850 which I found out the hard way and typically there is a no return policy on electrical parts once installed. Make sure to check and double check the #'s to make sure you have the correct one.

There's been alot of discussion about O2 sensors in the past. Some people have bought them at auto parts stores and found they're selling the wrong part number. Seems thay all use the same database so it doesn't matter which store you use. Check the FAQ's and get back if you need more info.

Its usually just the front O2 sensor that's bad. The rear sensor just sees clean exhaust if the cat is working right. You can get the OEM Bosch part from FCPGroton.com for about $110. That's what I would do. The average life is somewhere between 75-100k miles.
