Stalling at speed 850

My ‘95 850 Sedan w/5-speed trans has taken to shutting off while driving. It happens when the car is up to temperature, highway or in-town driving, but has not stalled from idle. It is a hard cut in power, no sputtering. When I'm sitting on the curb trying to restart, the car will sometimes fire and try to start, but won't idle until about five minutes have passed.

It's become more frequent now as spring has turned into summer, leading me to believe that temperature may be affecting the part that has gone wrong. Actually, that, along with a fault code pointing me to the cam sensor, led me to replace that sensor, but a week later the stalling had returned.

I would expect a hiccup or sputter or two from a fuel delivery problem, but that's what I'm leaning towards since there are no codes and all the ignition parts are fairly new and show no signs of problems.

Any words of wisdom or stories of similar predicament/solutions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Will

check the oxygen analyser. There's two of them, one at the inlet of the exhaust pipe ,forward part, the other on the pipe rear part It looks like a 3 inches fat tube , a phiallike protuberance. Most likely if it is the problem it is the one at the forward part of the pipe ,by the bottom rear of the engine It checks the amount of exhaust gas coming out of the engine and snds a signal to the fuel pump for the admission of fuel

Whitewagon said it all. Fuel delivery problems will not throw a code. So, replace the fuel filter first and suspect the fuel pump relay second.

Lets see, I bought the car at 120K...

So probably never.

I plan to check the fuel pressure tonight.

Thanks

Don't check it...just replace it. They are suppose to be replaced at 100K at the latest. www.fcpgroton.com sells the OEM (Bosch) one, but you can probably find it locally as well...not very expensive. Also easy to change. Just pry the hose off of it and insert the new one. Keep a towel handy for a bit of gas that will come out when you pull the old one off.

Funny you should mention FCP Groton versus locally available. FCP Groton is about 1.5 miles down the road from me! Convenient yes, though the price at the counter is usually slightly higher than online. I lubed the filter connections yesterday when I checked the fuel pressure. Last time I changed one of them the weld on the nut broke and I later got a face full of gas. Those hose connections are a real pain to get off.

Anyways, at least the pump/FPR seem to be OK. It gave 40 psi at the pump and 37psi at the rail at idle. Under load the pressure at the rail held steady at 34psi. I've not found prescribed pressures in any literature. That sounds adequate, but not stellar. I've seen cars run on worse, but that's usually when they're on their way out.
