ABS and TRACS Light Came On

On our '98 XC70 with 96K miles the ABS and TRACS light came on and stayed on until the car was shut off. Since then (a couple of days and 50 or so miles later) neither light has come back on.

1) is this an "early warning" of some major repair like replacement of the ABS module?

2)Will the OBD codes give any idication of what the lights meant?

3) should I be concerned driving it as is?

Thanks!
Jack

With the cost of diagnosis, isn't it a better deal to just send the ABS to Victor? If that's not the problem now, it would have been one in the not too distant future, so you really don't gamble much aside from 95% odds that it is the fix.

ABS and TRACS Light Came On

All the ABS control units (Installed on 96 and newer 850, 70 series and S80 models) will eventually fail after they reach 65,000 miles or 5 years. The average is 85,000 miles and/or 6 years for failures.
A dealer will charge from $60.0 to $120.00 to diagnose the problem and about 95% of the cases the mechanic will recommend to replace the ABS control unit.

Here's more information on this issue and a replacement alternative.

No doubt that you need a new module, but get it diagnosed properly first. Just to give you an idea, I am a one man shop and I just sent 17 control units out to my rebuilder. Get it checked out and get it replaced.
