ABS modules 850 1997

Does anyone know if the ABS module off a 95 850 wagon will work on a 97 850 wagon? Both are soft turbos as far as I know.

93-95 units are big, bulky, in front of the strut (not next to the turbo where they bake and burn).
In few words, they are almost bulletproof.
So ATE (not Volvo) decided to shrink everything, make it 1/2 the size it was, cram more components, build it into a plastic box that does not dissipate heat and then put it next to the turbo (when there's one) and call it a day.

93-95 Good
96-01 Not good
This is called progress, and, you cannot install 93-95 units on a 96 and newer Volvos.

Thanks Vic,
Nicely explained, I will remember the difference.
I have some heavy duty aluminum tape and fiberglass insulation, would that help slow down the ABS problem if I wrapped it up real good? At least shield it from the turbo?

1995 models are either non-turbo or high pressure. 1997 also has a low pressure turbo model. They use the same part numbers for the ABS/TRKS module, but the 1995 has a better unit! Even Vic R is suprised that he never gets any 1995 units shipped to him.

My '96 850 non-turbo has the ABS light on sometimes. The ABS module was replaced last fall, but with a used one. Is the module the most likely cause for the light?

Most likely.
All the units will fail.
Do you still have the original unit?

No, the guy who switched it kept it.

After reading your site about cooling issues (adding heatsinks) causing the problems, I made a metal heat shield around the ABS unit, with insulation inside. It took about 15 minutes, and I thought it would be fun to see if it helps.

NOPE it'll not work because '96 & '97 ABS modules are not interchangeable with the '93, '94 & '95 ones.

I sent mine (a '97 wagon !)to Victor Rocha to get it fixed

8602265 or 266 depending upon whether it has tracs or not. So if both of your vehicles have tracs or both of them do not then the control units should be interchangeable.
