Hard Starting - Check Valve? 850

My 1996 850 T5 went from starting normally to requiring 5+ seconds of cranking virtually overnight. Is there a check valve in the fuel system on these that may have gone bad?

When that happened to my 95, it was the fuel pressure regulator. Easy to diagnose: after the car has sat for about an hour, push on the schrader valve at the end of the fuel line (injector #5) and see if you get a lot of gas. A shop rag would be handy if there is a lot of pressure.
Also, when I had my daughter start the car, a puff of black smoke came out of the exhaust when the engine finally caught.

No, but there's a fuel filter. If it hasn't been replaced, it would be a good start. Otherwise, could just be tired rotor/cap.
