Overheating and steam coming from air vents! Oh crud! V70-XC70 1999

D'oh! So... the a/c in the car stops working... my wife and I start to fiddle with the controls... then a sweet (antifreeze) smell comes from the vents, followed by hot steam... followed by steam from under the hood (all this happening in 30 seconds)... crapola. I pull over and wait for the car to cool down... it's low on water... refill... start to drive towards the service station watching the heat guage ... 2 minutes it's getting hot so I pull off and wait quite a bit... repeat several times. I'm assuming my heater core is shot... could it be anything else? Can I replace it? I'm handy, but don't have a very well equiped shop since our move from Iowa to So. Cal.

Thanks all!

It's fairly easy to visually inspect the heater housing and even replace the core. Start by removing the kick panel on driver's side, left of console. You should be able to see if coolant is accumulating there. There are instructions posted on the web for replacing the core, with photos, if you find that it is leaking.

Sounds like the heater core. The heater core is like a little radiator tucked under the dash backs up to the firewall.
