Rerplace both odometer gears, or only the 15 tooth? 850

Hello all,

I realize that this has been covered many times before (as I have read those posts also), but I have one question remaining. In preparing to fix the odometer in the wife's '95 850 turbo, I need some opinions. Do most of you guys replace both gears (as recommended on odometergears.com), or only the commonly broken gear? Being $25 each, I hate to replace both if it's not really necessary. Here at the dealership, we always replace the entire assembly (the only part available from Volvo), so I have never done a repair. Anyway, please let me know what your opinions are.

Thanks in advance,

I just replaced the single small gear, the other's were fine. The replacement gear is made from a tougher plastic so its suppose to last longer. If you have a Turbo model be very carefull with the hose passing up behind the gauge cluster. The fitting on the rear of the Turbo gauge is plastic and can break easily. I would recommend unfastening the Turbo gauge from the cluster and letting it go with the black facia rather than pulling the pointer off the gauge's shaft. Its a very sensitive gauge and the shaft can jam easily with pressure required to remove and replace the pointer. The other online instructions are very good otherwise. If the car has many miles on it I would replace all the bulbs in the cluster while I had it out. Good luck.

I replaced both of mine at the same time. Considering the time to remove the dash twice, order the part twice and the risks of entering the dashboard area twice and tearing something else up in the process, the extra twenty-five seemed like a good idea to combine both wheels.
I have noticed a little whirring noise from there since the replacement. I did put a spot of vaseline on the wheels for the next 150,000 miles.
      good luck.
