850 Fuel Pump? 850

1994 Volvo 850 Wagon - NA 160K on the clock
Driving from Des Moines to Minneapolis this weekend and
3 hours into the drive the engine dies, car coasts to a stop.
Turn the engine over and it would not start.
Checked for codes - no codes set, no check engine light.
Had car towed from the interstate, went to a shop
about 10 miles away. Tried to start car, and it started
right up. Drove car another hour and it died again.
No check engine light, no codes - Waited 20 minutes
and started car again. Fuel pump made a bad, slow
whirring/clicking sound prior to turning the car over.
Car makes it to destination and dies.
Checked all of the diagnostic sockets, no codes set.

There are lots of possibilities, but I am thinking fuel
pump due to the sound of a slow(dying) pump.

Planning on dropping the tank this week and checking
it out - any other ideas out there?

Thanks -

A bad pump is a very good possibility, it over heats and then quits. Also check relay 103 under the fuses, it should still "click" when you turn the key on, if not replace it first - cheaper that way.
You do not have to drop the tank to get to the pump. A panel under the trunk carpet close to the rear seat will reveal the pump access.
