New to me 850 sedan 1997 model 850 1997

Hello,
I'm a long time RWD guy, new to AWD side. Just picked up an 850 for my daughter. She was driving a well used 1980 244 which she was tired of, so we found this for her. Has a really nice ride, much different than the 240s I'm used to. I have some electrical issues that maybe you guys can help me with.
Cruise control does not operate, 1 headlight wiper fails to operate, and I'm not sure how you work them anyway. The gas gauge side of the instrument cluster is dark, suspect that's just a bulb, but is it hard to get to? Other than these little things its a pretty sweet ride.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thanks...
Chuck Jaxel.
I've been converted....

Thanks for all the advice, man the instrument lights I thought were going to be easy, hah. Oh well, hopefully nothing gets broke during that fiasco!!!
Thanks again,
Chuck...

The cruise control and the right headlight wiper motor didn't work on my '97 GLT when I bought it, either. The dealer told me that the cruise problem was a missing section of vacuum hose, and they had to replace the wiper motor before I drove it off the dealer's used car lot.

Consider the orange and black cruise relay in the engine bay fuse box, that was the fault with our cruise. Let me know if you decide you need to try one in a swap.

Headlight wipers only work when the headlight switch is on and you wash the windshield. Check the wires on the wiper motor first. You will need to take out the headlight before you take out the wiper motor.
When you replace the instrument bulbs, replace them all so you don't have to do it again. Bay13 is: http://www.volvospeed.com/Dashremove.php

Cruise problem is probably the switch at the pedals.

Thanks Klaus... you've answered a question I had at the back of my mind about lights washer operation... B.T.W. do you know if it's possible to wire up the instument panel to light up whenever the engine is on, not only when the lights are on?

Europeans are lucky. The headlights they give us in the USofA are worthless. There are no city lights, can only be adjustedd with a screwdriver under the bonnett, and the beam pattern is not desigened for country roads. Our daytime running lights also have the tail lights on.
If you need the lights to see the instruments, then the headlights also need to be on. I have never encountered someone who would like instrument lights during daylight hours. There aren't that many tunnnels over here, and, where there are, headlights are required.

The cruise control issue is likely to be the switch on the brake or clutch pedal. If either has been bled, the switch will have been pushed out of its holder. Headlamp wiper is probably motor failure. Get one on eBay. The wipers all work together when you operate the screen washers. Instrument bulbs is a different matter. You will have to take the top of the dash to get access to replace these. Check www.volvospeed.com for how to do it.

For the cruise control if the switch adjustment under the brake pedal doesn't work, or the relay doesn't work, take the battery out and check the vacuum hose to it under the battery tray. If it is broken, you can splice in a new piece and it should work again. This was what was wrong with our old 850 when we bought it.
