Replacing Odo/Trip gears, and retrieving mileage via scan tool? 850 1995

I'm placing an order with FCP for several items I need to catch up on. I'll be replacing the odometer and trip nylon gears and want to know if there are any platic fasteners that I should have on hand should the originals break while pulling the dash pad.

Also, the gears failed last summer and I know I've put at least 20,000 miles on the car since then. Can the actual mileage be retrieved through the OBDII port under the coin tray?

Thanks,
Erwin

There are no plastic fasteners to worry about when pulling the cluster. Follow bay13's pictures and you will be just fine. The vents appear to be scarry when first pulling them out, don't worry.
You can retrieve the milage from the black boxes under the hood, so a good scan tool should also be able to read them. No one cares about missing a few thousand miles, if you are honest about it.

Thanks again Klaus. I'm looking at Bay 13 and am not finding the instrument panel section. Reading Haynes description is sobering as they pretty much detail the removal of the entire dashboard, steering wheel and column, wipers and apron to remove the instrument cluster.

Thank you Klaus. I remember seeing this dashboard page a couple of years ago but missed it this time around.

I greatly appreciate your responses to my recent questions.

Cheers,

Retrieving mileage via your ECU 850 1995

Check your actual miles from your ECU:
Use the DTC boxes up under the hood ('93-'95 only).

1. Switch ignition on

2. Connect the fly wire to socket - A7

3. Push button 5 times

4. When LED comes on and stays on, enter code 1-1-1 as follows:
- press the button once when LED is still on
- wait for LED to go out and come on again
- press the button once when LED is still on
- wait for LED to go out and come on again
- press the button once when LED is still on
- read off response, which will be the last three digits of the odometer miles

5. Repeat steps #3-4, but enter code 1-1-2 (that is, press the button twice on the last step); read off the response, which will be the first three digits of the odometer miles. If you have less than 100,000 miles, the first digit will read as 10 blinks.

Retrieving mileage via your ECU 850 1995

MIJ,

I have never seen that procedure anywhere and would never figure it out myself. Anyone buying a '95 or older 850 should know how to do this.

Thanks very much!

Erwin

Retrieving mileage via your ECU 850 1995

When I got home tonight I pulled the mileage from the ECU. Entering 1-1-1, the first three digits were: 8,10,1. The "10" threw me so I tried it a couple of times and the same series of flashes repeated. 8, 10, 1.

Entering 1-1-2, the numbers were: 127.

So, if it's showing tenths of a mile the mileage would be 127,810.1. I'll try again tomorrow after my commute to work and back.

My odometer stopped working at 114,020 so I've put about 17,000 on the car since then.

Cheers,
Erwin

10 blinks = 0 850 1995

If this technique is accurate, then I think that the "8-10-1" series would equal -801 (b/c 10 blinks = 0). Your overall mileage would therefore be 127,801.

Doh!

Of course. I'll check it tonight and see what it changed to.

Thanks,

Erwin

This is really great info!

My odometer quit recently on my 94 854T and I was wondering the same thing.

Cheers!
