Diagnostic Tool purchase 850

I'm looking for advice on the proper diagnostic tool(s) to acquire to determine fault codes, etc. Looking for something that will do the job and last, but not overkill. Any recs on manufacturers, models, what I should pay will be appreciated.

Thanks!

There are a bunch out there. But not all the computer based programs will work with the Volvo ECU. If you just want to read trouble codes the Innova 3110 is very good and easy to use, but it will not reset the oil service light. To reset the oil service light you need one of those Draper tools ($50?). The only thing that'll read everything and do everything is either the dealer's tool, or a Tech2 master mechanic's scanner ($5000?).

I second the Draper Reset tool...got one off of eBay about a year ago. You can do a google on one if you can't find one of eBay. UK vendors are willing to ship them to you in the U.S. Your other option is IPD's but it's like $180 with shipping.

I saw an ad for carMD. Seems OK. I use one from IPD that works well, but no computer element, just a book of codes to interpret from the number output. Works fine though.

I have been using an EQUUS INNOVA 3100 too. It works. You should be able to get one for close to $100 with diligent shopping.
I've also seen one at Walmart, it may have been an Actron, for under $100.

Thanks. Just searched ebay and found a couple around $85.00 and one at $50.00. Sounds like it should do the trick.

May want to look at Alex Peper's software if you have a PC. OBD-2.com I think. It gives you a bit more than standard "readers" and will reset the service light on the 96-97 850. You buy the cable/module from him and download the software from his site. Believe it will run ~$120-130 for everything. Works well but some of the icons and programs are a little hard to getnused to. I believe a British company produces something similiar.
