850 front seat belt 850

One of my front seat belts has jammed and looks like it needs to be replaced.

I was wondering if anyone has done this themselves and if any special precautions need to be taken with disconnecting/re-connecting the pre-tensioner, other than disconnecting the battery before doing the work.

I note that the Haynes manual recommends having this work done by a dealer.

Thanks in advance

The new seat belt assembly is around $300 USD - yes you got it right.

That's for the part only - I just replaced my driver's seat belt assembly.

The have a pyro charge capsule - which in a collision detonates and locks the seat belt in place to protect the driver.

Sometimes they just get jammed - but often at this age, they plain wear out and should be replaced.

Volvo designs the cars with a lot of safety features. For me, I do not want to risk a life by having a safety device not function.

Hope you can fix yours- be careful though if you take it apart. The pyro charge can be a hazard.

When that happened to my daughters 850, it was because the belt had twisted twice. All I did was use a lot of patience and pull ever so slowly, back and forth to get it all of the way out of the holder.
I don't like breaking plastic tabs and a dealer can fix it very quickly if you don't have the time.

      Thanks for your feedback Klaus

In my case the belt is OK there's no twisting and its wound on properly - the mechanism locks and won't let the belt out - so I am at the point where it needs to be replaced.

Since the assembly includes the explosive pre-tensioner, I want to know if anyone has replaced the assembly themselves and how it went for them

      Best regards

I did do mine myself. Mine got stuck just like yours with no belt crinking. I think I stopped fast once. Who knows. For around $50 I got a used one from a junkyard. I was actually easy to replace. Tell them to send the whole device.

email me if you need help . I did mine this week.
