check engine code PO455 appearing on the '96 850 850

I looked up the code, and it said "EVAP Emission Control System Leak(Large)." I am thinking that the smell of petrol is coming from the gas cap, and my father confirmed this when he returned home from the grocery this afternoon. Would a faulty gas cap throw this code? If not, any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)

I am going to get a new gas cap from the dealer tomorrow morning, and hopefully this will solve the problem. If not, I will look further into the possibility of the purge valve near the radiator. Thanks, and have a wonderful evening :)

Leaky gas cap is a good bet for that code. The ring that seals the cap to the filler tube dry rots with age.

This code is supposed to be mostly caused by not screwing the gas cap on tight. I have had it pop up though on occasion on my girlfriend's 98 V70. I know her cap is good because it is tested during the CA smog check. I would appreciate feedback if you find another common source of a "major leak".
