My car groans-what's that all about? V70-XC70 1999

My V70 emits groaning sorts of sounds ouut of the front end when I turn the steering full lock while I'm parking or doing U turns. On the road and at speed it runs and handles fine. There are no indications of ball joints or shock issues. It travels quietly over bumps and rough roads.
Can any of the savy Volvo owners offer any advice, suggestions, comments?
This is really puzzling to me. Or is this the issue with the wheels rubbing inside the wheel wells that I thought was isolated to 2000-2001 models?

Borton Volvo showed me where the steering stops were and how much grease to use on them. It is just 2 metal pieces where the wheel touches the frame, in either direction. Obvious when you see it. Borton greases them automatically at every oil change. Of course, I change my on oil, so...

Also check your PS fluid for color. It may be time to pump some out and replace it with new. Up until 1998 is was just ATF fluid, I don't know about newer models.

My car groans-what's that all about? V70-XC70 1998

I have a 1998 v70 with about 78k miles on it and it does the exact same thing. My mechanic checked the ball joints, boots, suspension, everything is apparently "ok". Road, bumps and driving is all good...it's really the same issue (turning wheel all the way, u-turns, etc).

I would love to know what to do for this as well.

This is a common problem easily solved by greasing the stops. The dealer did it for me so I can't tell you exactly what needs to be greased. There may be some posts here. You may want to check the archives.

Interesting, if it rubs, grease it!
Can I turn the wheel full lock and see where to grease? Anything special about the grease? Slop it on? So the tire rubs on the stops and now gets greased instead of groaning.
Any addtional details will be appreciated.

The groan is history! V70-XC70 1999

It took all of about five minutes (including finding some grease and a putty knife) to put an end to the front end groan. The stops were dry as a bone. They were easily accessed by turning the wheels full lock.
          Thanks for the tip.
