CVT auto transmission problem 400 1995

My 440 has the High Tech Auto CVT which has done 86K miles. No problems until now, when it suddenly started the whine. This noise is quite loud when starting, but seems quieter at cruise.
It is engine speed related, but only happens when moving. (not in neutral, or when stationary in drive)
Has anyone any experience of this?

This is not something we in the USA are very familiar with, not being allowed to have CVT on Volvos.
I suspect it is probably in need of a new belt, and I would ask Volvo for help in paying for a replacement. Very expensive.

I have had the transmission fixed by a local repairer. He knew exactly what was wrong and could even fix without removing the transmission from the car. Apparently there is a bearing which becomes indented and then the cage breaks up. If you don't catch it in time, the pump is destroyed, which is very expensive.
Cost me £300 and is a common fault, so if you get a whining noise, get it seen to asap!

THAT is a mechanic worth keeping around! The next time you see him in a pub, buy him a pint.
