Tachometer gone heywire?????????????? V70 awd V70-XC70 1998

The tach on my girlfriends 1998 V70 register some really high rpms. She told me when she get on the gas, it doesn't shift until 8000 rpms. I thought she was crazy....drove the car....she is right. But the engine doesn't "sound" like it's reving that much. I thought these things had a rev limiter before 8000. Could the tach just be misregistering? Other times it seems normal.

You are not nuts, there is a rev limiter and your tach should never exceed 7000.
Do this at night, with the dash lights at about 50%. If the intensity gets brighter as the rpms go up, you have a voltage regulator problem. Otherwise, you may indeed have a ghost living in your rev counter.
