Slight Whining Noise V70-XC70 1998

Hi All,
US model V70R AWD, 135000 miles. The car has been an absolute monster! Most recent EXPENSIVE failure was the driveshaft.
My problem, and not related to DS replacement as the car has done this since I bought it at 128000 miles, I hear a very slight whine when first accelerating from a stop. The car has a turbo, would this whine at so low a speed? I am mostly thinking it's the transmission but there are no shifting issues observed and the fluid looks pretty good. What else could cause this slight noise that isn't getting any worse? Alternator? I'm a bit reluctant to screw around with the tranny but I am willing to change the fluid using the replacement technique as outlined here or someplace similar. I believe the transmission type is AW42AWD. What is the recommended fluid type to use in this box? I figure I will need about 12 quarts to do a decent exchange. Does this trans have a filter that should be changed? I will not have the thing flushed as I am aware of the problems that can cause. Currently, the car has 4 new tires but I do not know how well the car was cared for. I do suspect heavy neglect based upon the amout of work I've had to perform just to bring this beast to life.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Tranny flush is easy as you've done your homework and know. My S70 (also '98) takes Dextron III/Mercron and I suspect yours does too, but you can switch to Mobil-1 Synthetic ATF...your car will love you for it. 12 quarts will cost you about $60...and they have it at AutoZone.
