MAF Sensor - Cleaning V70-XC70

This may be well known on this board, or have been discussed previously, but I wanted to pass along my experience.

I had a CEL come on. The dealer said it indicated that my Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor had gone bad and needed to be replaced ($400 P&L). I looked into it a bit and found folks on other car forums that said you could clean it with brake cleaner.

I actually found a can of MAF cleaner at Pep Boys. Removed the MAF using a Torx security bit, sprayed it several times until it was shiny and bright, and put it back. Reset the CEL and now, after about 10,000 miles (knock on wood) no recurrence of the CEL.

I hope this saves someone else some $$$!

LOL, usually it is just the plug getting corroded and cleaning that will eliminate the problem also.

It will probably be good for awhile. If I were you I'd go ahead and buy a replacement from www.fcpgroton.com and keep it in your trunk with a screw driver or ratchet and socket to replace it when it dies. I've read the posts of others cleaning theirs and it seems it's a temporary "fix" at best. Never know when it will die again.

Add to that trunk parts list:

      cam position sensor
      secondary air pump
      secondary air pump control valve

      ;)

LOL...yeah, the list could go on forever, however I was listing stuff that can be done easily on the side of the road.
        Here's what I carry:
        Emergency kit
        Equus Innova Scan Tool
        Draper Reset Tool
        Umbrella
        Container of radiator fluid (pre-mixed)
Radiator expansion tank extra green cap.
Set of basic tools: screw driver, adj. wrench, small ratchet with 10mm socket and a couple of small torx screw drivers, set of latex gloves and a couple of paper towels.
