ABS kicks in when it shouldn't 850 1997

I've got a new-to-me 1997 850 GLT wagon. When coming to a stop, it feels like the ABS is engaging allmost every time. Is this a common problem or does anyone have any ideas?

    Shuttering brake peddle is not common and should not occure. You could turn it off by removing the fuse to see if it still happens, but first, I would check your tires, all 4, for uneven wear and correct sizes.
    It could just be a bad rotor because one of the slide pins is no longer sliding and needs grease. Check the pads for uneven wear to verify that.

      It's not a rotor that's causing the vibration because the rate is the same no matter how fast or slow I'm going. Could one of these factors cause the ABS to engage at low speeds?

        The 4 wheel abs engages only when it detects one wheel rotating slower than the others, or a lock up.
        Have you tried to pull the fuse for the abs?

          I can save you some trouble I think. My 93 850 had the random abs activation. Stops, starts etc. After replacing pressure valves, all four calipers, and the ABS control, I found out it was the abs signal ring on the passenger front wheel. It appears that over time the rust builds up under the ring and apples enough pressure to crack the ring. The ring will be held in place, but with the crack, the pulse codes will be off. Over time the ring will losen even more and the crack will get bigger throwing the fault to the ABS sensor.

          Before you get knee deep, look at the front two ABS pulse rings, Check them over carfully, it is sometimes hard to see the crack. If you find the rings are cracked, you will likely need to replace the shafts with new or rebuilt units. I replaced mine and solved the problem. I wish I would have found that first and saved all the other expense.

            Do you have a picture of the ring or is it painfully obvious if I take the wheel off?

              no, I do not have a picture. Check out volvospeed.com Bay 13 repair. Replacing Wheel bearing. The toothed ring on the end of the axle is located behind the front wheel bearing. It is hard to see and inspect. I checked mine by removing the ABS pick up and looking down at the ring. If you follow the ABS electrical wire to the front wheel it should give you a good idea where to look.

              The trick is to see the ring, and inspect it carefully for cracks. If the Car can be placed on jack stands, transmission in Netrual, you can turn and move the wheels to see if you can get a better angle on it.
