for all of the ppl. considerign an 850/S70/V70? (I'm not sure if there's a difference with these cars or not, aside from appearances)//

    Yes, there are differences. Lots, from year to year. In 1999, computers took over and getting non-dealer service is harder.
    The 1997-8 trannies are a big improvement over the early models. The AWD for 98-00 are weak. The sensors have been slowly refined and have got better every year. The door panels are a problem for 1997-00.
    In other words, each year has it's own pluses and minuses.
