Alignments, swap rear and fronts first? 850

I believe I need an alignment badly. I have all the
typical symtoms. My two front tires are fairly worn
(one with slight abnormal wear) but they are the same
brand/model. My two rear tires look nearly brand new
with great deep tread, the only problem is that they
are different makes.

Should I:
1) Its better to have the same model tire (be it worn>
and go in for the alignment

2) Swap the tires before alignment.

3) Doesnt matter. Swap them later if I want, alignment
doesnt have bearing on this (Is this the case? kind of
ignorant to this part of cars)

I know... Youll probably say get new tires but I got to save
up for cv replacement. I got to cut some corners in order
to survive. So anywho... What is the conventional thinking on
this.

Thanks,
Jon

I would leave the tires where they are - if the alignment tech is worth his/her salt it will help them verify what is out of adjustment and clue them to possible further problems like bad ball joints or tierod ends. A good alignment rig measures angles in a way that does not depend on the tires.

      Thanks for the responces.

Idealy I would like to get two new tires for the front. It would be
$125 plus $18 for shipping from tirerack. It seems viable. Indeed
I am a college student, so I dont have much money to work with.

      Not
sure how much it costs to have a mech put the rubber on the wheels,
      is that a lot?

Since it just seems to need an alignment very badly now, it sounds
like I should just leave em the way they are like ksg said.

Idk though, ill keep reviewing my options.

      Thanks,
      Jon

If your CV is not making "clicking" noises yet, do the tires first. Winter is coming real soon, along with wet roads. Your safety depends on the tread touching the pavement. Having different tread patterns for two of your wheels will cause problems in the wet/snow due to the way the tread responds to the pavement or lack of.
Find a decent set of tires on tirerack.com and then ask for a mounting shop close by. Not all tires cost $150 each.
Once the tires are mounted, get the alignment done. You should get an alignment after every pot hole season in Boston, usually June.

The CV problem is not super expensive if you have it done at an independent garage that works on Volvos. Shop by phone and ask what they charge, it is usually a flat rate.

If you are a college student and short on funds, make use of the internet to find cheap/reliable mechanics and parts.
