Check Engine light S70 1999

Hi, I have a 1999 Volvo S70 with 73K miles on it and when I started my car early this week, the 'check engine' light came on. This was not caused by filling up the gas tank. I took the car to my mechanic who is an independent. Unfortunately, he doesn't have the software to check the car that are 1999 or later. He reset the 'check engine' light and it came back on the next morning. The dealer is my only alternative.

My mechanic told me that some people don't resolve the problem with the check engine light and drive it regardless. But I am also afraid that it may be something more critical. Performancewise, it drives great. Has anyone had issues with this problem? Any words of advice before I take it to the dealer. Thanks in advance.

A mechanic who does not have an OBDII scanner? How did he reset it? Take your car to an Autozone or Pepboys and have them give you the "P0nnn" (generic) code and look up the definition. If it is a P1nnn or P2nnn code, it will be a Volvo specific code - not engine or tranny problem.
Expect the dealer to charge you to read the code and reverse the charge if you get it repaired there.
