Aluminum Hose Between Air Filter Box and Engine Intake 850

Hi Everyone! I've had such great help in the past, I thought I'd try again. I hope some day I'll know enough to answer a question!

I tried starting my car the other day. It started but then the whole car sort of shook and rumbled and then quit. It would turn over but not start. I nosed around under the hood and found that hose that looks like accordian aluminum and about 2-1/2" in diameter was hooked into a metal pipe behind the lower part of the engine was easily removed from the pipe. It seemed like it should be tighter around the pipe so I took a metal hose clamp and tightend and lo' and behold, the engine started!! So then I looked in my Haynes manual for the car and could not find the name of that hose or what it was hooked up to so that I could tell if there is a part missing or not. Since the rock guard is missing, that piece (if there is one) could have been lost anywhere down the road.

Does anyone have any idea what I'm trying to describe and if so, do you know if I'm missing a part? I don't want to take the car out and get stuck somewhere if my "repair" isn't really one.

And as usual, help, please???!!

The hose you describe is an air preheater hose from the exaust manifold to the air intake. It prevents throttle icing in extreme cold weather and has nothing to do with weather the engine starts or not, and is not normally clamped at either end. A hose that would affect engine operation is a large rubber hose between the air filter and the front part of the engine which is the intake side. This hose does use clamps.

Nice find! That was your problem, but it should have given you a CEL. The missing clamp is just a solid hose clamp, so you should be golden. Now you know what the symptoms are should your AMM bit the dust.
I forgot to look at your ZIP code so I don't know where you live, but check out the junk yards for another splash pan and 2 10mm bolts to hang it back on. That keeps water off of your S belt and timing belt when you drive in the rain.

Hi Klaus, Thanks for your response and suggestion about the rock guard. Since I live in Seattle and the rains started earlier this week (really, I'm not kidding. We've had a beautiful, sunny summer) I should probably look for one.
Thanks again for your help! ~Marcia
