Burning oil, and fixes for it 850

As a follow up to a post about a month ago, my 850 turbo was puffing blue at startup, occasionally running rough, and going through Amsoil 0w50 at a frightening rate. Was told by shop to replace cbv (blow off equivalent) valve as many 850s with higher mileage (mine now approx 220k miles) have a leaking diaphragm. Well not to let a weekend go unproductively, replaced the oil trap system and the cbv valve. No more blue smoke or running rough. Still loosing oil from a filler gasket and turbo oil return line.

Haven't had much chance to look, but is the o ring and gasket on the oil return a hard fix to do at home? The PCV system was a definite challenge with the intake manifold, but all went back together well, and she runs! Any advice re the oil return line would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Perry

Burning oil, and fixes for it 850

I just did my turbo return line, and my year long leak and reluctance to believe it was the TRL (because the gaskets had been replaced only 10k miles earlier) proved false. Believe lack of bracket supporting the line caused leak. Just a note - on mine, the total amount of oil lost in 3k of driving was only around 1/2 quart.

Biggest part is getting under the car - I ran mine up on 8" thick blocks to allow myself to get under the center of the car behind the engine. You need a 5mm allen wrench for the two bolts onto the bottom of the turbo. As Klaus said, it is a contortion thing, and I fabricated an extension for my allen wrench using a 5mm socket with a 1/4" drive extension sticking out of it. Maybe you have an allen head with a socket drive which eliminates the need to worry about extending your wrench. For the support bracket, I don't know since my bracket was missing - maybe 10mm socket. Take the bracket off first, then the two allen bolts.

Slide the top of the line towards the back of the car, and pull upwards to get the bottom end out of the block. Use some RTV or sealant on the new o-ring before putting it back in. I bought a new bracket for $2 and hope to keep my engine dry. Easy job. Don 165k '95 854T

The turbo oil return line is easy, except it helps to be double jointed. Check out this:

and look for turbo oil return
