Volvo 850 design 850

has anyone else noticed that many of the recent so called edgy automobile designs such as the Chrysler 300C and the Cadillacs look like constipated volvo 850s. the 850 plus bloat? when i park my "brick" next to one of those cars my volvo looks sleek.

My son at 16 waxed poetic over the design of his grandpa's 1986 Camry, as I probably would have over a '49 Nash. Over the years I've come to view fewer and fewer of the world's car designs, old or new, as high art. My impression of the 2 you mention, though as new models they probably have many technical merits, is also one of portliness or even obesity (or as you put it well, "bloat"). But as good as my luck with the 850 has been, its stylistic impression for me is "nothing". At least it doesn't say "impotent".

    Just my personal view...

I always picked the 850 because it was ahead of its time in some of the features and safety.

I still show people the merits of the older 240 with the fuel injection, safety features like rear shoulder belts and and engine that is pretty good for the size.

The design of the 850 is squarer than the late model cars started by the taurus when it was first introduced. Since then everything looks like an EGG shaped car. Even the new volvos have adopted this look.

I think the trend is that the cars are moving back to having a distinctive shape.. im both delighted and amazed how cars like the new Charger and even the new Camaro have caught the essense of what a car should be in my mind.

Thank goodness car manufacturers are making their cars more distinctive... but i think they have learned the hard way because cars are getting harder to sell.. specially when we volvo enthusiasts hold on to our cars till they self destruct!
