Making a clicking sound in the 30 - 40 mph range V70-XC70 2000

And it is loud! My V70 XC AWD SE has 129000 on it. The bevel gear has been replaced. Recently it has started to make a noise that is very similar to the sound of putting a stick in the spokes of a bicycle wheel. It does not happen all of the time. The car has to be driven 15 minutes or so. Then when cruising between 30 - 40 mph, the clicking starts. If you slowly apply the brakes, the clicking slows as well. Stomp on the brakes or accelerator and the sound usually goes away. It is loud enough that people are looking over to see what the heck it is that is making the noise. By the way, it doesn't matter if the A/C is on or off. Of course when I took it to my mechanic it would not make the noise. Any ideas???

Making a clicking sound in the 30 - 40 mph range V70-XC70 2000

I have the same 2000 XC SE with 120000. I just had the same sound. It was around the shifter, but definitely drive train. It sounded as if dragging a metal tube down the road. Anyway, it was a CV joint in the drive shaft.

Sounds like a CV joint gone.

What should that cost to fix?

Replace the drive axle...don't bother with a CV boot kit. V70-XC70 2000

Just change the whole drive axle and not the CV boot. www.raxles.com is the place. Call them (as no Volvo axles are on their site) and talk to Marty. I recently paid $150 for one for my front driver's side. Labor for the R&R was only $25 (but that was at my very good and very cheap indy mechanic...he said it only took him 20 minutes). That, compared to buying a CV boot kit (maybe $50 from an online parts place) about $100 from the dealer and about 1.5-2 hours of labor...so you do the math. I first tried the CV boot replacement, wasting money, as the repair would not make a shake in my steering go away. The axle replacement is a "for sure" fix. I'm totally satisfied with raxles...they have New axles with no rebuilt parts.
