Alternator Removal? V70-XC70

My alternator has gone tango-uniform.

Seeking info from others who have replaced an alternator before. Any tricks/tips? Looks like a 4 hr. job having never done it before. Several items to remove just to get to it.

Thanks in advance!

Hey, I like that! It took a few seconds to get it. Interesting that nobody ever responded. Another possibility is they are very reliable.

Another way to say "toes up" ie dead.

I thought perhaps more people might have tried to replace their own alt. Now I understand they probably didn't want to hassle with it . . . and it is a hassle to do.

Yet another expensive job on a Volvo.

    Alternator Removal? Part III V70-XC70

Finished up last night after about 5 hours. I was able to remove the old alt within 1:40, but decided to clean some parts before reassembling everything. Don't attempt this if you have back problems.

Having socket/rachet combinations the proper overall length would help emmensely (immensely?) My long sockets were too long, and my reg. size were too short; even my short extensions were too long, particularly when it came to removing the numerous bolts to the PS pump. Once it's out of the way, the only remaining hurdle is removing the bolt on the backside of the alt.

I would have let my indy handle this, but I wanted to go out of town for the weekend and he couldn't get to it until next week. A load test showed very low voltage headroom (~ 12.5VDC) and current flowing out of the battery with headlights and AC running. How fun is it to get stuck on the side of the road while out of town on a weekend?

The funny thing was I was looking around for something square to use to engage the serp. belt tensioner and spied my Veritas Wonder Dog sitting on my woodworking bench (http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=2&p=31130&cat=1,43838,43847&ap=1) it fit perfectly! I slid a piece of rigid copper pipe over the screw-threaded end for some leverage. I couldn't get the three-quarters-held-in-vicegrips to work at all.

Now I understand why no one has replied . . . it's a major PITA!

Just when you think you're there, you discover there's one more bolt holding the thing on that's underneath it where you can barely reach and totally hidden from view.

    Geesh . . . .

yes your right the sizes of the sockets dont seem to work, lucky that i had a 1/4 socket mini system that worked well. I would almost think your better off loosening the housing for the cpu (the plastic black box) on the passenger side fender. This would give you more space on the front of the engine.

Your almost better off taking the power steering pump too and the roller plate which holds all that on.

There are 3 bolts for the alternator unit and some of the bolts are on the front of the engine and the others on the other side.

For a well designed car, i really feel this part of it was overlooked as it took me a few hours replace the unit on my 850.
