Transmission dipstick stuck... please help (1995 850 turbo) 850 1995

I just bought my first volvo last week with 183,000 miles on it and I'm falling in love with it. It is a 1995 850 turbo. I have been reading volvo sites like crazy and I want to do a trans flush because the trans shifts hard into each gear. Anyway, I went to check the trans fluid and it seems as though the trans dipstick is stuck or locked into the tube. I have pulled on it very hard to the point that I stopped because I was afraid of breaking the tube. Please tell me there is a lock or something that I have to undo to get this thing out. If there isnt, then has anyone else run into this and what do you think I can do to get it out. By the way i can twist the dipstick where its at with no problem, its just that when I try to pull it out it wont move. Please any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would really be surprised if you don't have to replace this tranny in a short while. I wouldn't say ALOT of '95 owners have posted problems but I have seen enough here including my own to conclude that the '95 trannys do seem to develope a unique problem. After a warmup run down the freeway they will slip after coming to a stop. They seem to switch to the "winter mode" when starting up. The car creeps alone very slowly for a few seconds before suddenly shifting to low. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you but you may want to start saving just in case.

well.. after doing a trans flush tonight i found out that the dipstick was just really really rusted stuck in there. I think it was the first time it had been pulled out for many years. By the look of the trans fluid, I would say it is the original fluid from 1995. The ATF fluid was pitch black and smelt really bad and burnt.

If that's the case, I'd drive it a couple weeks and flush it again. Are you using the procedure that changes all the ATF?

Unfortunately, volvo didn't want to give the impression the 850's are high maintance cars (they are) so they "addressed" the transmission fluid change by not mentioning it so there are many running round like yours with the origional fluid still in them. Also, the pre 97 850's have no internal filters.

I used the "pull top cooler line and flush into a bucket" method and it took about 15 quarts for it to turn out red... had to run up to the gas station and buy 3 more quarts! The only reason I did it was because my trans was shifting kinda hard into each gear, especially when I mashed the gas.

If it was that nasty inside, you might want to run a treatment of Auto Rx through it ( www.auto-rx.com ) It really cleans them out and can help a bunch if the valve body has got grundgy and shifting problems were already showing.

Look for a clip at the top of the steel dipstick tube, which has to be pushed aside to release the plastic dipstick top.
