98 Saab 900S anyone?

Whilst on my search for the perfect Volvo wagon I cam eacross an extremly clean 98 Saab 900S with a N.A. 4 cyl and 5 speed. It only had a mere 87k miles and the interior and exterior were cleaner and better well-kept than any Volvo or Saab I had seen up to that point.

I heard that some of these cars were real "sludge-monsters" in their motors, so I don't know what models that applies to...is there anything else that's a common repair repair problem with these cars? Has anyone here owned a FWD Volvo that can compare it to a Saab?

Thanks in advance for the replies!

    98 Saab 900S anyone?

i am a volvo guy, but a close friend of my wife had a Saab in the mid 1990s( i think about 1995) and she had endless troubles with that car. It seemed like something was always broken. She was lucky in that the car was leased and not purchased. As soon as the 2 year lease was up, she dumped the Saab and swore she would never have another one.

98 Saab 900S - - are you rich? Do you like to fix cars?

98 Saab 900S - - are you rich? Do you like to fix cars?

no, I'm not rich, I just think most of the Volvos' I've seen are too high priced for what I'm getting.

The reason why I posted this question, is b/c I'm a Volvo fan, but a Saab has come across my path, and it seems like a great deal :)

I didn't mean to insult anyone, esp. because I'm a Volvo fan myself. The only reason why I'm asking, is b/c I'm totally new to Saabs in general.

Again, I apologize if I have offended anyone. I think I am only being fair by considering several different makes, and models of vehicles that will suit my needs.

        98 Saab 900S - I don`t think you`ve offended anyone here

        Hi,
The responses that you received do`nt sound like anyone was offended by your query. You were advised to consider very carefully before you jumped in to buying a Saab. Maybe exercise a little common sense might be the point here!
I have no personal experience with Saabs, I`m a committed Volvo fanatic. However, I do have a couple of friends who bought Saabs in the past several years & based on their experiences I would not go near a Saab. One friend kept his for a year & got rid of it. The other still has his Saab but everytime I see him, he has a tale of financial woes & never ending repairs.
There are lots of good makes out there beside Volvo, Saab ain`t one of them!!
        Good luck!
        Rich

98 Saab 900S - THanks for the help Rich!

          Thanks Rich,
I work in a repair shop as a service writer here in Calgary ( so I can get some great deals on parts and service ;))
I have since contacted the seller, offered him 7200, and he wanted 8, so since he didn't want to budge, I jsut threw in the towel and thanked him for his time. I was willing on bargaining for this car, but the astronomical parts prices from my suppliers, was easily enough to deter me from paying his asking price.
I'm back to looking at Volvo wagons...but I think that search for a 5 speed is becoming harder and harder, even though Im here in Canada where the 850's were exported wiht 5 speed trannies.
          Thanks for the guidance!

There are 5 spd`s out there, Stanley 850

            Hi Stanley,
We ranch south of Calgary & looked in the local Calgary market for several months for a 5 spd wagon. Finally, I gave up & bought an automagic 855T wagon. It was in great condition tho & has been an excellent car for 6 years now(450K km on it now).My wife plans to get an 03 or newer wagon in the Spring.
My daughter bought a 96 850 5spd a few years ago, really nice car but no turbo. There was a 95 850 5 spd in really great condition for sale in High River last summer for $6000. It`s gone now of course but those 850`s are around if you look & are prepared to wait for awhile.
If you find a Volvo worth considering I`d recommend getting it checked out @ Valentine`s for the $100 or so. We do`nt get our car serviced there tho as we had a few negative experiences with the service(?) dept.
            Good luck!
            Rich

              Thanks Rancher Rick! 850

Yeah, it gets kinda trying on the nerves when our 97 Escort is starting to develop problems that I don't have the patience to deal with. Sure it's a super cheap car to maintain and fill, but thats where the benefits end!

I'm really kickin my self for not purchasing a 95 Turbo 850 I came across this summer. the mileage was high (or so I thought) at 193kms, and the owner was willing on parting with it for a song! Needless to say, I won't make that mistake again.

I've also started looking into some MB's as I'm a service writer at a small repair shop here in Calgary, so you can imagine the deals I get ;) as long as I can afford the parts (which I get at cost). I've owned 2 bmw's b4, so I'm aware of the cost/benefits of owning one of these european cars.

If you know of anyone selling a nicer 850/v70 here in the city (or around), drop me a line sometime :), till then I'll keep searching the classifieds.

              Stanley

                Thanks Rancher Rick! 850

I am no expert on maintenance but I happen to come accoss both SAAB (92 9000CS 60k km own by my family since new) and Volvo (95 850T5R auto 150k km bought 3 years ago) and I driven both recently.

The SAAB got very little problem except the broken air-cond but the big difference is that it feels very solid from the body structure, interer fixing, steering feel and there is nearly no rattle after 14 years. It drive and feel like a two year old car.

Where the Volvo feel loose, tinny and rattle.

It may be down to the difference in mileage and the fact that the Volvo got Koni shocks but look deeply, the 850 use a lot of Japanese parts and in a lot of places, they use clips instead of proper screw. May be that explain the difference.

    98 Saab 900S anyone?

I've had a couple of pre-GM Saab 900s, one of which made it to nearly 300,000 miles and the other which was so bad it made me buy a Volvo.

The '98 is post-GM, so it has little in common with the earlier cars, except for a fair amount of intrinsic weirdness. I wouldn't buy one unless I had a tame Saab mechanic. I did have one, but he finally threw in the towel and just works on Volvo marine stuff now.
