diagnose stalling 850

My non-turbo 850 (after filling up--maybe coincidental, maybe not) doesn't like accelerating from an idle. It stalls out a quarter of the time or flutters a bit until reaching higher rpm the rest of the time. It doesn't feel like a vacuum leak (e.g., dancing around/idling rough). Is this consistent with a fuel system issue, e.g., pump or relay? I've also heard that the idle control valve or fuel pressure controller might be suspects. Finally, my ignition switch has been getting quite bad to the point that sometimes the key doesn't want to come out, and we always have to do the "giggle" to unlock the shifter. Not sure if the ignition switch could be a factor in stalling. Thanks in advance.

diagnose stalling 850

My mom had this same problem with her 94 850 for a year now. She had a complete tune-up and it still happened. She took the car back to her mechanic and he checked out everything again. Of course the stalling did not happen when he had the car. He told her to put 6 cans of dry gas into the gas tank. I laughed but it worked!!!!! Her car hasn't stalled in 7 months. Don't know if this will help you, but it sure helped her!!!!!

Well I was driving it around town, and the P0103 code came up. Is stalling at idle or slow speed associated with this fault code?

That code is Mass airflow circuit detecting too much air flow. You either have a leak in your hoses (most likely your larger one to the turbo (or if no turbo then to the throttle body) or your MAF sensor is going out...most likely the cause for your stalling too. Other possibiltiy is that your front 02 sensor is sensing this condition and it's the issue...but I'm willing to bet it's your MAF...I had to change mine during last winter and your symptoms sound very much like what I was experiencing.

okay--here is a pic of what appears to be (to my novice senses) the sensor part of the air mass meter. Is this what i should clean--i picked up a can of air mass meter cleaner? Thanks!

Thanks for your reply, MIJ. I disconnected the MAF connector and no stalling! Gotta love this forum. I've read that cleaning the connectors might rejuvenate the unit. Would WD40 do okay for this? I also have some dielectric grease. And it would be cleaning the connectors on the outside of the unit, not inside the air box, right? i.e., I don't have to take the MAF out, do I? Would you bother cleaning the sensor by disconnecting the unit from the box?

And how long can one drive around with the MAF disconnected before ruining plugs, etc.?

Cheers. Paul M
