Help with the EGR plumbing (intake removal for PCV service) 850

I posted this on Volvospeed and Matt's Volvo site already, but haven't gotten any answers yet.

Is it safe to strongarm this piece that connects to the EGR valve off of the pipe? It seems like it came off backwards. It turns (with resistance) on the end here, which is how I got it out of the egr valve. The problem is that it seems frozen on the end of the pipe.

I'm curious if this is normal, or why it'd be stuck on here. I sprayed it with PB blaster and it's sitting, but it was showing no signs of wanting to relent.

OK here is the deal, I know I am a day late and a dollar short on your answer but what you want to do is this:
The very first thing you do on that system is to take the throttle valve out of your way so you can see what you are working on and then loosen the 7/8" nut that holds the pipe to the valve. Now with that nut loose and everything else tight and secure take a long screwdriver and smack it a few times where you have the red arrow in the picture. Utilize copious amounts of whatever penetrant you prefer and do not loosen anything else up until you have this union free. Loosening and removing other components in that system will only reduce the structural integrity of the whole thing. With everything tight you can concentrate the energy right onto that seized up connection. At this point you have it all apart and it is a bear to hold while you try to wiggle it apart.

    Good luck,
    Mark

I got the threaded piece off. Being steel, a ring of rust forms on the interior and created a dry lock on the tip of the copper tubing. I would advise everyone to do what Mark said, and get this part free and clear while the intake (egr) is in place. However, to free it like I did, it would probably come free with some PB blaster sprayed inside. I used my propane torch to apply heat and was able to knock it off. I then put it in the bench vice and used a steel brush on the threads to make the reinstall easier on myself.

But your reassurance that it does indeed come apart is all the motivation I need. I am going to use two parts lubricant and one part heat.

I did end up taking off the throttlebody to get at the 7/8" nut.

      Thanks for your input!

Glad you got it apart. I think that you will find the tubing to be typical mild steel pipe that has been hot dipped in zinc, aka galvanized. You know the funny part? When I replied to your message for some reason I was thinking I was still in the 700 series forum and wrote it up like you were working on a late model red engine. I re-read it after I posted it, thought about the 850 EGR valve set up, and said to myself, "self, that'll work just fine". Funny that both setups can be covered with one set of instructions.
