1994 850 Volvo - PNP

I've looked at posts today (all day) that talk about the PNP on 95/96/97's.

I have a 94 that had the lite issue that appeared several weeks ago. I went out of town for a few weeks and came back to a major issue. I attempted to pull the car out of my garage and found it would not go in reverse. There has not been any clunking or bad sounds from the transmission.

When in Reverse, the car will stand still for 10 seconds and then move forward. Again, no clunking or immediate shifting into gear.

With the information I have found on the web, I have to believe it is the PNP, but am not 100% certain.

While I do not mind spending the cash on fixing, I understand that a full tran will cost 2 - 3K.

Any insights would be appreciated.

Thanks Inadvance.

JON

Did you "row" the shift lever yet? Turn the key to position II and with the foot on the brake, row from P to L about 20 times. Then start the car and try it. If it now works in reverse, it is the PNP switch.
Also check the codes in A1... there should be a few.

Klaus,

I checked the A1 and it showed a 3-1-3 code.

I did try the Row, no help.

I was watching for the reverse lights to come on and did not see them. My gut is telling me it is the PNP. Anything else come to mind?

Thanks

Jon

"Faulty signal from the gear position sensor" = 313.

Time to replace the PNP :)

Klaus,

No improvement with PNP being replaced. :<

Mechanic (whom I do trust) indicated next step is to look at linkage. Is that even possible with the Transmission in the 850's? (I'm showing how little I know about cars at this point):>

Thanks
Jon

PS, Any/All advice is appreciated.

Now that you have a new PNP installed and properly adjusted do you have reverse lights and are there any codes stored? What is the overall condition of the fluid and have you had any situations where the vehicle does not want to shift out of first gear for the first 5-10 minutes in the morning when it is cold? You said "the car will stand still for 10 seconds and then move forward". Clear that up for me a little bit, does it go into reverse after some time or does it move forward?

As far as the linkage goes, I am sure it is entirely adjustable but I have never had reason to adjust one, well other than the time my previous partner destroyed a transmission trying to get the nut off of it to change out the GPS, but that is another story. So long as no one has screwed with it or it has not been in an accident that would effect it I would not expect the cable adjustment to mysteriously go south on you. One of the things I would do to check it would be to start the car, set the parking brake really, really hard, put the car in nuetral, and then reach down and manually pop it into reverse from under the hood and see what happens. Obviously if everything is adjusted properly and it still does it then you probably have little recourse except to change out the trans. The infinitesmally small silver lining in all of this is that the rebuilt trans does not come with a new GPS so your money spent on the new PNP switch will have not been wasted if you decide to put a trans in it.

Have your guy double check settings and cables and see where it is at. I would think that a simple put it in reverse and verify that the reverse lights are on and make sure that it starts in P and N only should suffice.

Good luck,
Mark

Thanks Mark,

I have not talked to my mechanic this evening. The news he provided this morning is what my email was based on. I'll ask him about the reverse lights and the other points you brought up.

Regarding the slow shifting out of first gear, a couple times in the past few months. I attributed it to being colder, and the minimal amount of driving the car has had in the past several months. I have been traveling for work so the car has only been used on the weekends.

Regarding reverse and 10 seconds, does not go in reverse at all.

Two other questions if I may,
If it is the trans, what sort of $'s am I looking at? The car is in wonderful condition (with this exception), and only has 86,000 miles on it. The balance between what I should and can spend will help determine the fate.

Second, when placed in reverse (assuming the trans is bad), would the reverse lights go on? It would make sense that if reverse is gone, the PNP would not pick it up. Does that make sense?

Thanks !

Jon
