Air Flow Control knob stuck 850

Greetings

My '96 850 Wagon Air Flow Control knob (sorry, don't have the book yet to give proper name but its the knob to go from face to feet to Defrost etc... on air flow) is stuck and requires vice-grips to turn but it does turn. Is it safe to shoot some WD-40 in there to attempt to loosen it up?

Also, the AC light doesn't light up when the switch is pushed to the left position (on?) and the recirculate light never goes off no matter what position the switch is in. The recirculate switch is wobbly so I'm also guessing I should just replace that unit. Is that the Heater Control Unit? and does anyone have a recommendation on a place that sells them?

    I suggest you visit Ebay and look for a new control unit. 1996 or 1997 would work. Just make sure that the picture matches yours EXACTLY.
    Or go to a junk yard and get a replacement. WD40 will not work well. If you want a laugh, stop by a dealer and see what they charge for a new one!!!! $950 for an ECC!
    They pop right out, after you take the radio out (don't disconnect the radio).

      Found a MCC replacement at a local junkyard for $35, 2 screws and it popped right out. 3 plugs and I was then done. Very quick and easy replacement since I just needed to replace the knobs and switches part and not the actual gears and cable connected part (but I have it for future use if needed now)

      1 part down

      dozens to go :-)

      Where does the Blower Motor Resistor go again? I still have the problem of the fan only working on setting 4 (0-3 do nothing)

        Remember, you have the 3 speed resistor, not the variable speed with the ECC.

      Air Flow Control knob stuck 850

      Saw a post on another group discussion that made me pause.

      Whats the difference between a MCC and an ECC? Mine doesn't have any numbers (temperatures) on the heat dials, it just has red bars that get larger in size as temp setting goes up (clockwise turning). Does this indicate I have an MCC?

      Just want to make sure I'm searching for the correct part.

      So its called an ECC huh? very interesting :-)

        Air Flow Control knob stuck 850

        Remember, there are 2 different kinds. The Electronic Climate Control and the manual control type.
        The manual has fan speed numbers, the ECC has temperature numbers on the two knobs for heat/cool.

          Ok, looks like I have a MCC then. I have Fan Speeds 0 1 2 3 4 (only 4 works) and no temperature numbers on the left and right temp dials, just the red bars.

            Then you also need a Blower Motor Resistor w/o Electric Climate Control $56.00 at FCPGroton. Or look for one of the auto supply houses in the left coast.

              Gotcha. I've checked ebay and done a few googles and am not finding much out there for MCCs or ECCs. I'm thinkng my best bet is going to be the junkyards around here. There are a ton so I'm sure I'll find something somewhere.
