I tried to open my sunroof this afternoon and it started making a horrible grinding noise. So I stopped, tried to close it, and could only close it until it was 1 inch open. Yoiks! What should I do?

Here's what happened: One of the sides got stuck and the cable is slipping at the motor.
How to fix it: Remove the motor, it just pulls down after taking off three bolts. The plastic cover can be removed if you first remove the covers over the 2 lights - you will see a torx screw which holds down the plastic cover.
Then, with the motor out, the cable will easily slide back and forth. Now, move the SR into position. If you move it to the raised up position, you will be able to remove the plastic covers on each side of the SR, and oil the hinges which are stuck. Remember to have the SR perfectly "square" before putting the motor back in!

Thanks Klaus. Are you referring to the three black bolts perhaps? I removed the three bolts on the silver section, but it did not pull out at all.

Only 3 blots hold the motor in place. The motor whould wiggle out and fall down quite easily. You might want to unplug it first...

Quick fix, I'm told you can remove the panel above the rear view mirror
(dome lights)and manually close it.
