power steering fluid leak S70 1998

Okay, putting aside the leaking evaporator for now I am trying to determine what is wrong with my steering rack. I ran out of power steering fluid and tried to find where the leak is. The only wet area is around the area where the steering column attaches to the steering rack. The fluid lines are all dry. Is it safe to say that the seals are leaking and the steering rack needs to be replaced or is there some other reason that power steering fluid is leaking from this area?
Thanks to anyone in advance for responding.

Wayne

Hi,
had this leaking pinion seal one/two years ago, topped up with atf including seal tendering component and got leaking down to a quite tolerable level.
My question here would be: is it enough to renew top seal only or is the reason deeper inside the pinion. Does one need to take the rack out of the vehicle or can it be replaced on spot?

the 70 series volvos are known for leaking at the hose that attaches to the PS pump. Get a new clamp, refill reservoir and see what happens.

Yep, fill it back up and see what happens. I have seen them leak out of the pinion shaft seal like you are talking about.
