Fuel Pump Replacement - Insert only? 850 1997

In spite of my hopes - it appears as though I will be replacing my fuel pump over Thanksgiving weekend. I've checked at Groton and Eeuroparts, and they are offering the "insert only" for a substantial discount over replacing the entire assembly. Does anyone have experience - good or bad - with repairing the fuel pump this way?

    Thank you both for your help. I've just placed an order with Groton (even though they have done away with free shipping) for the Bosch replacement insert. The Welbro and Pierburg were cheaper - but I'm hoping the Bosch ($195)installs easier, lasts longer and is a better fit. This is still about $150 less than "Genuine Volvo", and more than $400 less than having it done. Thanks again for all of your help - I'll let you know how things work out.

    Man I'm bored tonight.

    Mike: If you search for volvo 850 fuel pump on ebay, they have a pump only Walbro or something and it shows the instruction page. The pump is just held in the housing by a few screws, looks really easy. Ony 68.00, but I think I would stick with bosch.

    Turkey and gasoline. Sounds like fun.

    Mike:

    The insert from Groton is Bosh I think. Same exact pump as the whole assembly, except without the plastic body.

      Its a bit more work..but well worth the $$$ . there is a place called fuel pumps online ..not had experience with it but you can buy them about 68 bucks also.

        You're probably going to find that it is a change-up pump and while it may fit into the earlier style housing it will be less than ideal. The early style pump only inserts have not been available for a few years. I use to use them exclusively in my shop but since they have changed over to just installing complete units, good luck.
