Cooling fan runs continuously S70 1998

The cooling fan on my non-turbo S70 starts immediately when the ignition is turned on and runs for several minutes after the car is shut off. The temperature gauge remains low suggesting that the engine is being kept extra cool because of the excess fan action. I did flush and change the coolant three days ago and am not sure if the continuous fan action started immediately after or not. Could this be the sensor in the thermostat housing? Or the relay above the fan in the shroud? Something else? The check engine light also came on tonight but car seems to run fine. Thoughts?
Thanks

common symptom when the coolant temp sensor has failed.
Replace it along with a new T-stat and you'll be fine.

I have a similar behavior, is this something a mechanically inclined person can tackle, or would people recommend against it ? I have to bring in my S70 to the local Volvo guy(non dealer) anyways for some other stuff, is it typically a $$$ job or should I just let him go at it when I have it in the shop...

As recommended, I replaced the thermostat and coolant temp sensor which solved my problem immediately. The car gets to operating temp and stays. Cooling fan not running. The install was exceptionally easy. You will need a torx driver, a #40, I think, which you can get at any hardware store if you do not have a set. You have to manipulate the thermostat housing a bit to get it up so that you can remove the sensor. You will need to top off your coolant as well. Maybe took me 30 min but could be done in 10. I bought the thermostat and sensor from my dealer to ensure correct parts for a cost of about $80. Next to removing the brake ABS unit, this is about as easy as it gets!

Will the "check engine" lamp turn off when the sensor and T-stat are replaced or will this need to be reset via a code reader?
thank you!
