If it was already in defrost mode, then the resistor for the blower motor probably died. That little part costs around $100.
Slide the speed control all the way to the right, do you get max speed? If no blower at this point, then it could very well be the climate control unit itself. Remove the passenger kick plate and check the current at both ends of the resistor pack. Try moving the center knob to different vent directions, if there is no response... get a newer unit. Beware, the dealer wants $950 for an electronic climate control unit! Junk yards might be better.

do you have an automatic climate control on the car?

If so .. perhaps it has gone defective. Best bet if its that is to pull the unit out and replace it.

Check the relay just to the left of the resistor pack. I had this same thing happen to me on my '96 855 w/ manual HVAC. It turned out to be a short in the connections beneath the fan relay. There are two right next to each other. Sorry, I can't remember which one had the short. If the relays are hot to the touch it is likely you've found your villain. I went through replacing the resistor and the dash switch. The next step was replacing the control unit. I chose instead to take it to the dealer who had a hard time figuring it out. I felt slightly vindicated. Good luck.
